We’ve made a small update to the ultralight tent reviews at Outdoor GearLab — check it out if you’re looking for a new lightweight tent.
My personal favorite tent in the review is the SlingFin Splitwing, which is what I used the most on my Nolan’s 14 recon trips, Collegiate Loop training, and other fastpacking adventures, like my Hoosier to Loveland Pass trip (The Argentine Super Spine) . It’s extremely lightweight and packs down to nothing, but I still have confidence that it would survive (along with me!) during a spell of bad weather while exposed on a ridgeline.
For me the SplitWing is the successor to the Ultimate Direction FK Tarp, but the SplitWing is approx 100 grams lighter, a little smaller (as it’s made for 1 person rather than two), and has a much better and lighter sil-nylon fabric. I had to finally retire my FK Tarp after years of use, including the two months of using it on my Tour of the Highest Hundred. I really applaud its design. Unfortunately, it is not available to purchase anymore.
