At around 1:00 am the previous night, I settled on the idea to try the, “Ring the Peak” route around Pike’s Peak. You can learn about the route here and here. I just thought, “Yeah, whatever” and took a few hours snooze and headed out the door from Denver, towards Pikes Peak, via the Rampart Range Road, a nice 50 mile track of fairly well maintained dirt road, with a nice elevation gain (up to 9,400 feet or so) and relatively little traffic. Rode 105 miles on Wednesday, far more than I intended, but happy nonetheless to cover the miles. The original plan was to ride fairly directly to Idaho Springs and follow the, “Oh My God” road to Central City. “Oh My God” is, I think, simply an old dirt road first graded during some gold rush,used before the much larger Central City Parkway was built.
A Tercel is a Young Male Hawk
Falconers used to believe that the third hawk egg in a clutch would be a male. So they call a young male hawk a “tercel” from tertiius, “third.” Who knows why carmakers name their cars the way they do.

Except for Friday’s crushing 94 miles, this was a pretty chill week. I had planned much more epic trips, but they didn’t quite materialize, if not for me not being ready, because the weather last week, sucked.
I took the SPOT II tracker with me for all my rides this week (I think?) and have it record my progress. The tracks are a little disappointing in their resolution, but it may be partly the fault of my placement of the device – either in the feedbag of my top tube, or in the upper pocket of my hiking pack.
I’ll write some sort of actual entry, soon, but I’d like to just give thanks to Illegal Pete‘s. I let myself spurge in buying their tasty tasty burritos after rides, as a nice way of giving myself a little treat as well as supplementing my dirtbag diet of rice and beans and oatmeal and pb+j’s and whatever else I can whip up in my kitchen.
Completed my first overnighter of the season! Haven’t camped out since November, where I road from Denver to the trailhead of Pikes Peak (~100 miles), hiked the Class 1 trail (~26 miles) and rode back the same way as I went, all in three days.
The plan for these two days was to ride to Rocky Mountain National Park, camp out overnight and then the next morning, hike up Twin Sisters and ride out the same day.
I recently grabbed a SPOT II GPS messenger to play around and get familiar with, before the big Grand Départ. Here’s a tracking of my ride on Thursday:
You can kind of tell that I left from my doorstep, went through downtown, took the Platte River bike path to Bear Creek Lake, fumbled around some trails there, out into Morrison and North to a trail head on Green Mountain, did a lap around and then across onto the Dakota Hogback via the Zorro trail and ending by going North through Matthew Winters, into Golden and finally, back home.
This weekend is the Paris-Roubaix! One of my all-time favorite one-day races, if not for the fact that it was first raced in 1896 on Sunday, April 19th – or on Easter Sunday – no one really remembers… – and I was born a little over 100 years later on Sunday, April 19th, which was also an Easter Sunday. These types of coincidences should not be taken lightly. So, when I found myself living in Paris, wanting to visit friends in Amsterdam, I thought it best to visit the route used in the race.
Below is what I wrote in November of 2009, after I finished up successfully making it to Amsterdam in 5 days. Certainly not a speed run, but the route from Paris to Roubaix, by first cycling fairly straightforward to Compiègne and then following the route eats up almost 400 km itself. Then there’s the simple matter of passing through an entire country in a day and finally traveling the Netherlands to Amsterdam in the final. Totally ruled.
